When you have a real pain in the neck, it is a cause for concern, especially when the pain sticks around longer than a few hours or a couple of days. There are many reasons for neck pain, ranging from sleeping incorrectly the night before to sleeping with bad pillows or on a bad mattress to pulled or strained muscles to a strenuous workout. We’ve all experienced neck pain at least once and understand how excruciating it can be. But for some people, the pain doesn’t subside and becomes a huge cause of concern.
You can attempt to stop neck pain yourself. Some people successfully eliminate the pain and think nothing more about it. This is the ideal solution to neck pain, of course. Some of the techniques to try to minimize or totally eliminate your neck pain:
· Apply an ice pack to the neck for 15 minutes, followed by heat for 15 minutes. Complete this procedure 2x daily until the pain subsides.
· Gently massage the neck on each side and turn it from side to side to stretch out the muscles. Sometimes nothing more than a good stretch is needed to alleviate soreness in the body.
· Maintain good posture to minimize neck aches and pains. The neck is aligned with the spine and bad posture can be a culprit of neck pain.
No one wants to prematurely visit a doctor. It is an expensive visit, after all, even when insurance is available to use to offset the costs. But, protecting your health is of top concern and sometimes you’ll need to make that visit whether you like the idea or not. When is it time to see a doctor for the pain? If you have tried to stop the neck pain with OTC remedies to no avail and the pain is standing in the way of your day to day activities, it is beyond time to schedule an appointment at the neck pain management center. The doctor can determine the cause of the pain so treatment can begin, hopefully resulting in the demolition of the pain that you feel.
Other signs that it is time to schedule an appointment with the doctor are:
· There are accompanying symptoms with the neck pain, such as headaches, tingling in the extremities, or heart pain.
· The pain has persisted to no avail for several weeks.
· Discomfort worsens despite treatment.
· Pain develops after an auto accident, slip and fall injury, or other type of personal injury accident.
Of course you want to see the doctor (or visit an emergency department) anytime there is trauma to the neck. Neck trauma can occur any time a serious injury happens. This type of trauma is commonly experienced by athletes when playing sports and after car accidents, but there are many other causes as well. Be sure to make a visit to the doctor as soon as possible if you sustain an injury that causes the pain or if you suffer from muscle weakness or a high fever with the neck pain.
