M.H. Pee’s article “Trend Trigger Factor” in the December 2004 issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities magazine (TASC) presents the Trend Trigger Factor (TTF) indicator. The TTF is a method of detecting uptrends and downtrends using buy power and sell power calculations derived over the previous n-periods.

Interpretation

Typical uses include creating an always-in-the-market system whereby Sell trades are generated when the TTF crosses down through the 100 level and Buy signals are generated when the TTF crosses up through the -100 level.

The Hodrick-Prescott filter or H-P filter is an algorithm for choosing smoothed values for a time series. The H-P filter chooses smooth values {st} for the series {xt} of T elements (t=1 to T) that solve the following minimization problem:

min { {(xt-st)2 … etc. }

Parameter l>0 is the penalty on variation, where variation is measured by the average squared second difference. A larger value of l makes the resulting {st} series smoother; less high-frequency noise. The commonly applied value of l is 1600.

For the study of business cycles one uses not the smoothed series, but the jagged series of residuals from it. H-P filtered data shows less fluctuation than first-differenced data, since the H-P filter pays less attention to high frequency movements. H-P filtered data also shows more serial correlation than first-differenced data. (Econterms).

Modified moving averages are similar to simple moving averages. The first point of the modified moving average is calculated the same way the first point of the simple moving average is calculated. However, all subsequent points are calculated by first adding the new price and then subtracting the last average from the resulting sum. The difference is the new point, or modified moving average.
